Difficulty concentrating is a common problem associated with Andropause, which is a natural stage in every man’s life and is increasingly gaining recognition as a changeover period. A brief overview of the phenomenon of male menopause will help you understand the symptom of difficulty in concentrating that many men experience during this life-altering stage.

The word, Andropause, is formed by combining two Greek words: andro meaning male and pause meaning stop. Therefore, we can safely surmise that Andropause refers to a condition that comes about when outward signs of masculinity are affected and men face varying degrees of physical, mental and emotional dysfunction-all of which are not life threatening and can be treated.

One of the first common complaints from men going through Andropause is a perceived difficulty concentrating as well as easily losing focus on the task at hand, which many men may not even be aware of is often associated with male menopause.

Often male menopause can strike well before the socially accepted age of 50 years; affecting men in their 30s and 40s as well. This difficulty concentrating can be easily confused with the occasional stress or anxiety related to jobs, personal relations, or lack of sleep instead of the Andropausal symptom that it actually is.

Right Diagnosis and Importance of Timely Remediation Measures for Andropause Symptoms: Difficulty in Concentration

It is very important for men and women to understand that while an occasional instance of difficulty concentrating may not spell doom for the average man, the reason why it is occurring is linked with a decrease in the hormonal production of testosterone. Increasing episodes of difficulty concentrating is a sure sign of male menopause and may likely bring with it more health issues like an increase in abdominal fat; declining muscle mass and strength, decreased motivation and sexual drive, fatigue and moodiness.

These symptoms of male menopause may debilitate the average man, not aware of their underlying cause and lead to irritability. After all, the grumpy old man syndrome probably has its origin here and being able to medically attribute it to Andropause, is plausible for men affected by mood swings.

Male menopause, Difficulty Concentrating and Decline of Testosterone Levels

When men experience Andropause, there is a gradual decline of about one to two per cent a year in the levels of testosterone in their bodies. This hormone is produced by the testes, and is the main male sex hormone responsible for secondary sexual characteristics like facial hair and penile growth.

It also controls muscle gain and fat distribution. Since testosterone production decreases, men going through Andropause, get adversely affected in many ways and these symptoms, like difficulty concentrating or sleeplessness, if left unchecked, may well lead to other bigger health issues.

Therefore, the need for a change in lifestyle, better health education and Andropause awareness for both men and women and timely remedial measures is very necessary to deal with this natural life changing stage for men.

Some men’s health clinics in the major capital cities advertise testosterone replacement treatments - given by injection, tablets or skin implants – and these are increasingly gaining acceptance as treatment options for the side effects of male menopause, be it difficulty with concentration or memory loss.
